A click-clack or fold-out sofa bed isn’t like other sofas: it opens, it folds back, and anything that gets in the way of the hinge ends up being taken off. An ordinary sofa cover wraps the sides and goes behind the backrest, exactly where the mechanism works. Our sofa bed covers are cut differently: they stay short at the sides and open at the back, where the backrest tilts. They go on with the sofa bed closed, then follow it as it opens and closes.
Click-clack or fold-out: the same cover?
The two mechanisms don’t open in the same way, but in the sofa position they look the same: a seat and a backrest in one piece. So you choose the cover in the same way for both, by the length of the seat.
How to measure
- Close the sofa bed into the sofa position.
- Measure from one edge to the other, along the outside, over the full length.
- If your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the larger one: the fabric stretches, but not indefinitely.
Sizes depend on the material:
- stretch, water-repellent jacquard and velvet: S from 150 to 190 cm (60-74 in), L from 190 to 210 cm (75-82 in);
- faux leather: S from 120 to 145 cm (48-57 in), M from 150 to 185 cm (60-72 in), L from 190 to 210 cm (75-82 in).
Two mistakes to avoid: measuring the bed when it’s open, which gives the wrong length, and choosing a straight sofa cover ‘because the width matches’. It would cover the sides and get caught in the hinge the first time you open the bed.
Which material to choose
- Stretch, soft and supple, stretches over the seat and offers the widest choice of colours, plains and patterns.
- Water-repellent jacquard makes liquids bead on the surface: you have time to blot them before a stain sets in. It’s the cover for living rooms where people eat.
- Crushed velvet, also stretchy, has a shiny, marbled texture that really changes the look of a tired click-clack.
- Faux leather has a sealed surface: a quick wipe with a sponge is all it takes. It’s also the only material that comes in three sizes, including a small one for 120 cm seats.
Fitting the cover
With the sofa bed closed, pull the cover on from the top. Make sure no fabric gets caught in the hinge, then open the bed once to check that nothing gets in the way of the movement. Allow about two minutes, no tools needed.
And at night?
If the mechanism still moves freely with the cover on, you can open the bed without taking it off. If your mechanism is tight, the cover comes off in moments at night and goes back on in two minutes in the morning. Either way, keep a sheet to sleep on: the cover protects the furniture, it doesn’t replace your bed linen.
Care
Stretch, water-repellent jacquard and velvet are machine washable at 30°C, without fabric conditioner, and left to air dry: the tumble dryer wears out the stretch. Faux leather is cleaned with a damp sponge.
