Velvet is all about its pile: too much heat or a tumble dryer crushes it, and the colour looks stained when the pile is only flattened. Brushing in the direction of the pile lifts it back up.
Day to day
- Blot any spill straight away, dabbing gently: velvet has no water-repellent finish.
- Between washes, use a soft brush or the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner, always in the direction of the pile.
Washing
- Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle, with the cover turned inside out and a detergent for delicates, with no bleach or fabric conditioner.
- Very gentle spin, 600 rpm maximum — or no spin at all.
Drying
- Dry flat, in the open air, out of direct sunlight. Wait until it’s dry before brushing it in the direction of the pile and putting it back on.
Avoid
- Tumble dryer, ironing the pile (even on a low heat), bleach, rubbing it dry, putting it back on while it’s still wet.
