Velvet Armchair Cover

A velvet armchair changes a room. Light doesn't sit on it the way it does on a flat fabric: it sinks in, and the colour looks deeper.

This velvet armchair cover gives that effect to a chair you already own, without replacing it.

What it changes at home

Measuring your armchair

One cover per armchair. Measure from one arm to the other, following the shape of the chair, arms included, with the tape measure flat against the fabric: this cover fits from 90 to 140 cm. Beyond that, choose the Velvet Sofa Cover — the 2-seater size starts at 145 cm. Check the depth too: from the top of the back to the front edge of the seat, following the fabric, 140 cm at most.

Which armchair? A classic armchair with a straight back and arms — the kind you find in a living room or a bedroom. A tub or club chair, with a low, wraparound back, needs the tub chair cover; a chair with a high back and side wings needs the wingback chair cover, each cut for its shape.

How to measure

• Classic armchair, with a straight back and arms: measure from one arm to the other, following the shape of the chair, arms included, with the tape measure flat against the fabric. The cover fits 90 to 140 cm. Beyond that, choose the sofa cover in the 2-seater size (from 145 cm), in stretch, water-repellent jacquard or velvet. Check the depth too: from the top of the back to the front edge of the seat, following the fabric, 140 cm at most.
• Tub chair, club chair or Scandinavian-style armchair, with a low back and solid arms: it has its own cover, in one size, cut for this shape: 70 to 90 cm high, 65 to 95 cm wide, top of the back 55 to 75 cm, seat 35 to 55 cm wide.
• Wingback chair: 69 to 80 cm wide at the top, wings included, 95 to 110 cm high, 80 to 92 cm deep from front to back.

Fitting

• Centre the cover on the back, slip it on from the top, pull it down with both hands, tie the cords under the chair, then tuck the foam tuck-in sticks into the gaps. Two minutes at most, no tools, no need to remove the cushion.
• Wingback chair: fit the cover over the wings first, then pull it down.

Velvet is all about its pile: too much heat or a tumble dryer crushes it, and the colour looks stained when the pile is only flattened. Brushing in the direction of the pile lifts it back up.

Day to day

• Blot any spill straight away, dabbing gently: velvet has no water-repellent finish.
• Between washes, use a soft brush or the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner, always in the direction of the pile.

Washing

• Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle, with the cover turned inside out and a detergent for delicates, with no bleach or fabric conditioner.
• Very gentle spin, 600 rpm maximum — or no spin at all.

Drying

• Dry flat, in the open air, out of direct sunlight. Wait until it’s dry before brushing it in the direction of the pile and putting it back on.

Avoid

• Tumble dryer, ironing the pile (even on a low heat), bleach, rubbing it dry, putting it back on while it’s still wet.
