Water-Repellent Sofa Cushion Cover

It's the cushions you cover, not the sofa. Each cover goes on one cushion at a time, like a fitted sheet on a mattress, and comes off just as quickly for washing.

The fabric is a stretch jacquard with a water-repellent treatment. A spilt drink doesn't spread straight away: liquids bead on the surface in round drops, giving you time to wipe them with a cloth. That makes all the difference in a home with children, a dog or simply dinners in front of the TV.

The treatment doesn't make the fabric stiff. The jacquard keeps its texture and its stretch — you can feel it under your hand, it doesn't feel like plastic.

Choosing the right size: measure before you order

It's the one step where a mistake means a return. Get out a tape measure and take two measurements of one cushion, lying flat, with its current cover removed: its width from front to back (the first figure in our sizes), then its length from side to side (the second figure).

The price depends only on the size and is shown in the selector. The colour you choose never changes it.

If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the larger one: the fabric stretches, but only so far.

How many you need

One cover fits one cushion. A 3-seater sofa whose seat is made of three separate cushions needs three covers, and three more if you want to cover the back cushions too.

Count your cushions before you order, not your seats: it isn't always the same number.

On orders of £85 or more, delivery is free, plus two free cushion covers: your basket lets you choose them.

Care

Machine washable. Take the cover off, wash it, put it back on. The fabric gets its shape back.

For everyday spills, there's often nothing to wash: liquids stay on the surface, and a dry cloth is enough if you wipe straight away.

The ten colours

Grey, Light grey, Black, Pearl white, Sand, Chocolate, Dark burgundy, Verdigris, Indigo, Petrol blue.

Greys and neutrals come first in the selector. Grey, Black, Chocolate and Dark burgundy also come as a water-repellent sofa cover, if you want everything to match.

This isn’t a sofa cover: each seat or back cushion gets its own, slipped on like a fitted sheet. Allow one cover per cushion — a 2-seater sofa with two seat cushions and two back cushions needs four, a 3-seater needs six.

How to measure

• Lay the cushion flat, with its current cover removed if needed.
• Measure the cushion from front to back (the width on our size chart), then from side to side (the length).
• Choose the size that covers both; if your measurements fall right between two sizes, choose the larger one. The measurements of each size are shown in the size selector.

Fitting

• Lift the cushion, hook the cover over two opposite corners, stretch it over the other two, smooth it out and put the cushion back. About a minute per cushion, no tools.

Fitting guide

The water-repellent finish gives you time, it doesn’t seal the fabric: liquids bead on the surface, you blot them up, and nothing sets in. Fabric conditioner clogs the finish and cancels it out, and so does the heat of a tumble dryer.

Day to day

• Blot while the liquid is still on the surface. Dab, never rub: rubbing pushes the liquid between the threads.
• Vacuum now and then in the direction of the weave; a soft brush cleans the texture.
• If a spill has been left to sit, a full wash will freshen the fabric — the water-repellent finish can’t prevent a stain that’s left too long.

Washing

• Turn the cover inside out to protect the texture.
• Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle with a gentle liquid detergent, with no fabric conditioner or bleach.
• Gentle spin, 800 rpm maximum.

Drying

• Dry flat or on a clothes airer, in the open air. Put the cover back on while it’s still slightly damp so it tightens back up; the water-repellent finish reactivates as it dries.

Avoid

• Fabric conditioner, tumble dryer, bleach, rubbing, a hot iron on the right side.

Care guide

The cushion covers are washed one at a time: the cycle is shorter, and the rest of the sofa stays covered.
